The emergence of the 5G technology network is a hot topic in the technical world and among cell phone users worldwide. There is widespread excitement over the existence of a network that can speed up internet connections faster than the currently available 4G network. Trailing these anticipations are doubts and questions, one of which is its effect on health.
The 5th generation of cellular networks uses a more sophisticated form of technology to work unlike its predecessors. It uses base stations with a higher frequency but with relatively low power levels. But where currently available cellular networks make use of a low radio frequency of about 1.9 to 2.45 gigahertz per cycle, the 5G network will make use of waves that fall within the estimated frequency of 24 to 94 GHz.
Although this falls within the acceptable radiation exposure limit established by the International council on Non – ionizing radiation protection (ICNIRP), a large number of scientists and health experts are not convinced that the magnanimous cellular network is without health risks.
IS THERE REALLY A CAUSE FOR CONCERN?
The WHO has made it known that there is no sufficient scientific evidence that has proved that the use of radiation-emitting cellular networks can be injurious to health. The FDA assures us that there is no need to be alarmed. And the ICNIRP believes the new technology does not exceed the radiation limits to exposure, hence there should be no cause for worry.
But despite these assurances, the negative health effects associated with the use of 5G network remains a topic of debate.
Already, there are a number of scientific studies that have pointed out how exposure to high cellular radiations can increase the risk of developing cancer and other health conditions such as impotence in men. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a subsidiary under the WHO categorized Cellular Radiofrequency radiations as likely to cause cancer (carcinogenic).
The concern that 5g cellular networks may be injurious to health is not totally unfounded. The fact that it uses a very high wavelength known as millimeter waves is one of the core reasons why its effect on health is disputable.
Although the millimeter waves are a non-ionizing form of radiation which isn’t harmful, continuous exposure to the flow of energy from the waves at very low power levels can prove harmful. Because the waves cannot travel long distances without being blocked by obstacles such as trees, there will be a need to build a large number of mini cell towers and base stations to achieve the purpose of providing fast speed internet and data connections to a large number of people at a time.
With thousands of these masts and base stations all over the place, the world will be practically swimming in radiation.
In addition to this, millimeter waves classified under microwaves can penetrate the human skin and the cornea of the eyes. The human body can absorb radiation from microwaves and convert it to heat, this conversion causes tissues and organs to become heated.
Consistent heating of the body tissues and organs can negatively affect the eyes and other organs such as the kidney and liver. It is no wonder why the US army uses radiation of the same frequency range as microwaves used in 5g technology to heat up a large population of people from a safe distance.
The most recent study, which spanned a period of ten years published by the National toxicology problem reported that long term exposure to cellular radiofrequency radiations increased the level of brain cancer in male mice .
However, the researchers noted that the reaction in mice cannot be compared to that of humans, as the level of exposure was much more intense than the allowable limits used in 2g and 3g technology respectively. But this whole experiment cannot be totally relegated to the background as there are loopholes in the study that may point to a relationship between cellular radiations and negative health outcomes.
For starters, the research was carried out using similar radiations from 2g and 3g networks only, which have a far lower wavelength than the 5g technology network.
The 5g technology will not only introduce the fastest internet connection the world has ever seen, but there are also plans for the technology to power self-driving cars and elevate virtual reality, which means more base stations and more exposure to radiation.
WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD
The implementation of the 5g technology network will no doubt be a huge contribution to global development with it’s acclaimed technical benefits, but in order to put to rest the fears, worries, and speculations that have sprung up since it’s introduction, more research needs to be done to ascertain it’s health impact on the human body.
While we await scientific research that will provide the answers that we need, we can protect our body from the harmful effects of cellular radiation by adopting the following precautionary measures :
- Cut short cell phone usage time or any other device that uses the radio frequency wave
- Keep a safe distance between your mobile device and your body, especially at bedtime
- Make use of speaker volumes while making calls, to avoid close contact between the head and mobile device
- Do not use your cell phone to receive calls when the power level is extremely low.
